6th grade Science

Monday - Today Periods 1 and 3 continued presenting their volcano vocabulary Google Slides. Period 2 fell behind so they will begin presenting tomorrow.

HW - Any volcano quests that you haven't done in class should be done at home so that you can prepare for Thursday's volcano assessment.

Tuesday and Wednesday - We are going to finish all the volcano vocabulary Google Slides presentations, then I will give students a vocabulary quiz to test their knowledge before Thursday's test.

Students should be working on their volcano quests on 3D GameLab to prepare for their test.

Here are the volcano quests students should be working on:

  1. Type that Volcano
  2. Type that Lava
  3. What Did You Learn About Mt Saint Helens?
  4. Active Volcano
  5. Type that Eruption
  6. Mt Saint Helens Rebuild
  7. Volcano Vocabulary
  8. Is Mt Saint Helens Catastrophic?

Thursday - Today students will take a volcanoes assessment based on everything we've been learning about volcanoes and specifically Mt Saint Helens. If students don't meet standard on this test they can re-take the test after learning some more (by completing more of the aforementioned quests) to get a 3 - meets standard - or a 4 - exceeds standard.

Here's a copy of the rubric I will be giving students to assess themselves after I read through their responses: Volcano Assessment Rubric (the rubric is part of the Is Mt Saint Helens Catastrophic quest so those students who have started that quest have seen the rubric and the question directly associated with the rubric).

Here are the other learning targets for this volcano unit:
Learning Target 1:
Students will be able to distinguish between different volcano types including how they differ and how they are similar and how they are formed.

Success Criteria 1:
Students have drawn, labeled and colored five volcano types as well as described how they are formed, their shape, and their size.

Learning Target 2:
Students will be able to distinguish between four different types of lava and match lava types to the five different volcano types.

Success Criteria 2:
Draw, color, label and describe each of the four lava types describing how the water and silica content affects how the lava acts.

Learning Target 3:
Match the five volcano types, four lava types and to the four different eruption types.

Success Criteria 3:

Students can defend the reasons why they chose to match a certain volcano type to a lava type to an eruption type.

Those who finish early can work on their 3D GameLab quests.

Friday - I will have a substitute today so that I can attend a Common Core Standards training. I will be at that training today and tomorrow then Sunday I will be at a Science Conference. I will be presenting in the morning and attending sessions after that! It's going to be a busy weekend!! :)

Students will be working on their 3D GameLab quests while I am gone so they should be totally fine. I am expecting them to behave well and treat the substitute teacher with respect.

This week, depending on weather, my period 3 (Period 2 is way behind on their volcano vocabulary presentations so I had them switch weeks with my Period 3 who is farther along) class will do the fish trapping activity. Students will set traps on one day (the plan is to do this part on Tuesday), then retrieve the traps the next day (Wednesday) to identify and count any fish we catch. We will return the fish to the creek and record the counts to send to the Jefferson Conservation District.
