HW - If you have not yet completed your Robotics Vocabulary, Energy Vocabulary, or the Friction assignment, it is still due and needs to be finished at home for homework.

Tuesday to Friday - We will continue our physics practice with the Forces & Motion Quizizz assignment as well as the Human Flight and Super Speed discussion forum assignments. Students who finish all of those can begin working on the Newton's Laws of Motion with Football assignments!

In addition to the physics practice, the Nature's Fury robotics challenge is due this week! We need to finish it so that we can move on to the Potential Energy robotics challenge that comes next. I have an idea of maybe merge the ideas students are generating in their Nature's Fury challenge with the Potential Energy challenge so that teams can continue working on some of their really good ideas.

Monday - Garden today!

HW - 6th graders ONLY start completing your Islandwood overnight trip packet. Permission slip and health forms need to be filled out and signed. There is a Medication Authorization form for those who will need to take medication at Islandwood.

Please complete the permission slip and health forms and return with your child to your homeroom teacher by February 17.

Discuss with the School Nurse any medications your child may need, have a completed medication authorization form for each medication (requires doctor and guardian signature), and have a week’s supply of those medications in original prescription bottles ready to go with your student. You can reach Nurse Reina at 360-302-5957 or reina_garcia@csd49.org

Tuesday to Friday - This week in Science students will be working on their Friction reading assignment and then practice with Forces and Motion on another Quizizz. Students who have not yet completed the Robotics Vocab or the Energy Vocab Quizizz practice can still do so at home for homework for full credit.

After the Friction reading and the Forces and Motion Quizizz practice, teams will continue working on the Nature's Fury Robotics challenge. Teams are learning about natural events that become natural disasters. Each team will design a robotic solution to a natural disaster of their choosing and then build and program a prototype with their EV3 robots!

Here's a list of the robotics vocabulary.

And here's a list of the energy vocabulary and concepts.

And here's what kids are learning when they take the Forces and Motion Quizizz:
  1. friction
  2. speed
  3. velocity
  4. acceleration
  5. force
  6. mass
  7. gravity

Monday - Semester Break - No School Today

Tuesday - I will have a substitute guest teacher again today so that I can finish my training. Students will be working on their energy vocabulary if they are not finished yet and/or their friction reading. Those who finish the friction reading will move on to the forces and motion Quizizz.

For robotics, teams still working on the How Fast assignment will work on that and teams that have begun the Nature's Fury challenge will work on that.

Wednesday - I will be back today and we will be working on the same assignments as yesterday. This is the last chance students will have to finish the How Fast assignment.

Thursday - Starting today, Thursday, we will switch to our new 2nd semester classes. All students will have the same Science, ELA/SS, and Math courses in addition to the same Music, Art, Library, Resource Room, and PE courses as before only they will grouped into different classes than the first semester.

Because in all three of my classes students will have different teams, we will determine whether we can finish the Nature's Fury challenge. Teams who did not complete the How Fast challenge will not be able to complete that one.

We will also begin character trait lessons to help students make better decisions in school to make our classes and campus safe, happy, and fun. These lessons might start next week if we are not ready by today, Thursday.

Friday - Same as yesterday.

The concepts kids are learning in the energy Quizizz are as follows:
  • energy
  • potential energy
  • kinetic energy
  • light energy
  • thermal energy
  • elastic energy
  • stored chemical energy
  • nuclear energy
