Week 7, 5/18 to 5/22

Monday - Today 6th graders will be testing in the morning during our 1st and 2nd period time.

We will have our regular 3rd period classes after lunch.

HW - None if you are all caught up. See below.

Tuesday to Thursday - This week student teams need to graph and analyze all the data we've been collecting from the fish trapping data to the water quality data.

Here are the other deadlines:
  • Teams need to finish learning what their water quality parameter means.
  • Teams need to start learning about the salmon life cycle.
  • Teams need to learn what all the benthic macroinvertebrate bugs we found in our creek mean about our creek's biological integrity.
  • Teams need to work on adding their new learning to the team's final project website.
  • NEXT WEEK teams will make a poster to share their learning and data at the June 4th GreenSTEMs Youth Summit.
  • The first week of June students will practice their presentations so they are ready for the June 4th GreenSTEMs Youth Summit! (We need parent chaperones for this field trip. We could use nine to twelve parents to chaperone groups of six to nine 6th graders each. More info coming as June 4th approaches.)
Friday - Today Reed from the North Olympic Coalition will return to visit our Science classes. Reed will conduct watershed activities with students to show them how pollution enters our waters.

Monday - Today students will practice their keyboarding and work on the WoWinSchools 3D GameLab assignments.

Tuesday to Friday - This is the last week for students to play their Alliance characters. Next week we will learn the story of our enemies, The HORDE!

Week 6, 5/11 to 5/15

Monday to Thursday - If it's dry we will start class by walking to the creek to collect all our water quality data.

Deadlines are as follows:

  • Teams need to finish learning what their water quality parameter means and what the data is telling us about our creek.
  • Teams need to start learning about the salmon life cycle.
  • Teams need to learn what all the benthic macroinvertebrate bugs we found in our creek means about our creek's biological integrity.
  • Teams need to work on adding their new learning to the team's final project website.
  • By the end of May teams will make a poster to share their learning and data at the June 4th GreenSTEMs Youth Summit.

Monday - Today students will practice their typing and work on WoWinSchools assignments that deal with the themes we are learning by playing World of Warcraft.

HW - You can do your WoWinSchools quests at home too! No need to play the game to get those done.

Tuesday to Thursday - Continue playing World of Warcraft to learn more of the story as your character advances in the game.

Friday - NO SCHOOL TODAY as CSD protests our state legislature NOT fully funding education for our children! Join us!

Monday - Today Reed and Kendra from the North Olympic Salmon Coalition will be visiting to teach the kids about biological integrity. Reed and Kendra will bring benthic macros from HJ Carroll for kids to identify.

HW - None

Tuesday to Friday - For the rest of the week I will finish training teams on how to use the water quality testing equipment. Once all teams are ready we will begin going to the creek to collect DO, pH, temp, turbidity, and flow rate data.

After collecting data we will finish using the benthic macro data to determine the biological integrity of our creek. Students will also continue studying their water quality parameters to make sense of the data we will be collecting.

Monday - Today students practiced their typing by taking lessons on Typing.Com then they worked on 3D GameLab WoWinSchools assignments.

Monday - Today my 1st period class will be taking their performance task and test based on that task as part of their test preparation.

After lunch my 3rd period class will have Science. They will continue working on learning their water quality parameters.

HW - None if you're all caught up, which means you finished your water pollution public service announcement (if you haven't finished it, then it's homework).

Tuesday to Thursday - Teams will be learning their water quality parameters this week. If I can train all the teams on how to use their water quality testing probes and sensor interface devices then we can start going to the creek to collect data.

Friday - No School Today - Snow Make-Up Day that was never used.

HW - None

Monday - Today all 6th graders will be going to the auditorium to meet author Martha Brockenbrough during 4th period.

Tuesday to Thursday - This week students who are playing WoW will continue to play to both level up their character and learn the story. Those who are still working on their 3D GameLab assignments will work on completing those so they can take their typing test and begin playing the game.

Friday - No School Today - Snow Make-Up Day that was never used.

Monday to Friday - This week the 6th grade will have strange schedules so that every class can take their interim practice assessments. Due to the strange schedules we will not be doing any fish trapping this week unless we can get creative (which may mean one class sets the traps and another class retrieves the traps).

When in Science teams need to complete their Water Pollution PSA's (Public Service Announcements) and begin learning about the water quality parameters we will be testing. 

I will then train teams on how to use the equipment so that we can start going down to the creek and collect data!

HW - You can work on any part of this project that you did not complete in class, such as the water pollution section.

Monday to Friday - This week students should complete their Courage, Heroic Quotes, and WoW research assignments to begin the grand adventure in Azeroth!

Some students completed all the required assignments last week so they already started playing the game.

Monday and Tuesday - This week student teams are supposed to complete their Water Pollution Public Service Announcements (PSAs).

This week 1st period will be responsible for the fish traps.

HW - If you still need to get your Water Quality Testing Permission Slip signed, do so and turn it in quickly so we can start learning how to use the equipment and start collecting data.

Wednesday - No School Today for Student-Led Conferences.

Thursday and Friday - Once teams complete and have their PSAs published I will start showing them how to use the water quality testing equipment so that we can begin going down to the creek and begin collecting data.

Sixth graders will be on a rotating schedule today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday) so they can take their practice or interim SBAC tests. Kids will have two days of practice testing done by the end of next week.

Monday and Tuesday - Students are completing several assignments having to do with the beginning of a heroic journey and researching their favorite races and classes in World of Warcraft. 

Once they are done with the above assignments students will take a typing test to get their words per minute. Then they will be ready to begin their World of Warcraft adventure!

Wednesday - No School Today for Student-Led Conferences.

Thursday and Friday - Same as Monday and Tuesday. Those who finish all their assignments and take their typing test will begin their adventures in the World of Warcraft.

Week 10/1, 4/6 to 4/10

Monday - Today students should start working, or continue working on their Water Pollution Public Service Announcements (PSAs). I'm going to give a short water pollution quiz to see who is not yet ready to start their PSA.

HW - Get the Water Quality Testing Permission Slip signed and returned to Mr. G by Friday so we can start taking trips to the creek for data collection.

Tuesday - Today we are going to do an activity on Scientific Thinking so that students can see the importance of checking their sources when doing research. It's not as easy as Googling and accepting the first site you find.

Students will be asked to form project teams today that they will work with until the end of the year, including presenting at this year's GreenSTEMs Youth Summit (more info coming by the end of May). Teams will need to be balanced so that they have all the skills needed to successfully complete this project.

HW - Same as yesterday.

Wednesday - Today we are going to begin an activity called Food Miles to learn the added cost of buying foods that come from far away vs buying locally grown food.

HW - Same as Monday.

Thursday - Today students will complete the Food Miles Activity so they can continue working on their water pollution PSAs.

HW - Same as Monday, permission slips are due tomorrow so we can start going to the creek next week.

Friday - Continue working on the water pollution PSAs.

HW - Same as Monday.

WoW in Schools

(This is my 2nd period class come back for 4th period. By Wednesday, when the 4th quarter begins it will switch to my 3rd period class coming back, or rather staying, for 4th period!)


Monday and Tuesday - These will be the last two days for students to play their Horde character and learn our enemy's story. Those who aren't done with their final keyboarding test or the end of course survey will do those first.

Wednesday - Today my 3rd period class will begin the WoWinSchools World of Warcraft (WoW) course!

I will introduce the course today.

HW - Take home the parent information letter and get it signed and returned to Mr. G.

Thursday and Friday - Once I'm done introducing the course students will begin accessing their WoWinSchools lessons and activities to begin doing the work they need to get done before they can begin playing World of Warcraft (WoW)!
