Quarter 3, Week 10, 3/30 to 4/3

6th-grade Science:

Week of March 30 to April 3, 2020 -

In these unprecedented times I'm here to help your kids. Whatever your kids can do during this is great. Don't worry if it's taking longer than usual, that's to be expected. Tell your kids to check Classcraft everyday if they can or every other day or at least once per week. Whatever you can manage works for us at Chimacum Elementary School!

Here's what they can do for Science, especially if they are getting restless and bored:

  1. Finish Hydro Dynamics Challenge (Here's a video playlist I recorded to help kids - the playlist link is on Classcraft for kids to watch - and if they ask me questions on Classcraft, I can help. I can record more videos to help any kid that needs more instruction - just ask.)
  2. Draft the water pollution Public Service Announcement blog post and submit it so that I can give feedback.
  3. Play the review physics Gimkit game.
  4. Play the Water Pollution Kahoot game.
  5. Play any of the Science games on the Gonzalez Legends of Learning Playlists.
  6. Leave comments on each other's blog posts.
  7. Watch the Classdojo videos.
  8. Finish the Star Trek class story.
  9. Bonus: Play any of the many Hour of Code Games!
The videos on my playlist show kids how to access/find all of the above activities! But if they have questions, tell them to ask me and I'll record a video or Zoom with anyone live to help them through it.

Quarter 3, Week 9, 3/23 to 3/27

6th-grade Science:

Week of March 23, 2020 - This week students need to work on, or finish, designing the solution they came up for the water pollution problem they are studying. (Here's the document students are typing on. My homeroom students, get your podcasts recorded and complete the Helping Hands quest assignment.)

- Students need to update us on their progress using this Flipgrid.

- Students can use any household items, including cardboard and recyclable plastic items all the way to Legos, to create a prototype of their solution. Students do NOT need to build or program a robotic solution unless they have a robot and can do so.

- Turn in the Hydro Dynamics Challenge on Google Classroom AND Classcraft once you are done building your prototype!

- Students who are done researching, taking notes, and building their prototype are ready to share their learning and ideas! You will begin working on the next Quest Assignment = Public Service Announcement.

Here are two sample Public Service Announcements from last year:

  1. New Continent to Be Named: The Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch
  2. Your Air is Bad, Fix It
----

Notice:

I already messaged every parent on Bloomz letting you know that Chimacum Schools ended the 3rd Quarter on March 16, the last day we spent with students face-to-face.

I also sent every parent a copy of my 3rd quarter report card on Bloomz letting you know how your child did on their physics unit. Students who got a 3 or a 4 are done with the test! Those who scored a 1 or a 2 will need to study more to retake the test. Here's the study guide that students are using to study.

Just let know when your child is ready and I'll assign them the retake. I just ask that you watch and confirm that your child took the test without using any notes and without looking anything up on the Internet.

Quarter 3, Week 8, 3/16 to 3/20

Mr. G's 6th-grade Homeroom

Monday to Friday - From March 17 to April 24 feel free to work on your Podcast if you have technology at home that allows you to do that. Message Mr. G on Classcraft when you finish Quest Assignments so that he can check your work and get back to you and unlock the next quest assignment.

You can also check Book Creator and work on your book. If you can't or don't have access to technology you can keep adding to your book from home in a writer's notebook using paper (you know, that other technology 😂).

I'll post more here or on Classcraft next week.
6th-grade Science

Monday - Today we will prepare for the upcoming six weeks. Students will choose team roles so they know what to do while at home for our Ocean Guardian School Environmental Stewardship Project.

Tuesday to Friday - This week all of Chimacum School District Teachers will be planning how to best get lessons, assignments, and projects out to students. In the meantime, if you are able to connect at home, you can still access Classcraft and Google Classroom.

This week just focus on getting your Hydro Dynamic Challenge learning done. Plan out your solution, then focus on finding things at home that you can use to build a model of your solution.

Please consider using recyclable items such as things made of plastic like plastic bottles to make your solution prototype!

That's what you'll submit for this quest assignment INSTEAD of a robotic solution.

Monday - This week teams who have been taking notes on their water pollution problem from the Hydro Dynamics Challenge research will be getting their solution ideas approved so they can start building a robot prototype!

HW - None unless you still have to make-up your Physics Test OR if you still haven't finished your CER conclusion.

Tuesday - Early Release Schedule, students will continue to work on Hydro Dynamics Challenge water pollution work.

Wednesday - Early Release Schedule and today we will spend most of our time together celebrating crushing our fundraising goals!

Thursday and Friday - Continue working on the Hydro Dynamics Challenge water pollution research and solutions!

This week period 2 will set the fish traps one day, then return the next day to ID and count any fish we catch in the traps. We always return the fish to the creek. If it happens, it will be Thursday and Friday if the weather is good.

Other than that everyone else has begin our official Ocean Guardian School Environmental Stewardship Project by researching different types of water pollution for the Hydro Dynamics Challenge! Science teams will be designing robotics solutions to a water pollution problem they choose.

HW - Students keep bringing in their Choose-A-Thon monies! It's looking like everyone did an amazing job get sponsors! We'll be planning our celebration and give out prizes!

Also this week students who have studied and are ready to re-take the Physics test can do that. You can only re-take the test IF you studied the Pear Deck study guide.
